The Congressional Executive Committee on China held a hearing today entitled “Religion with ‘Chinese Characteristics’: Persecution and Control in Xi Jinping’s China.” The hearing focused on the government’s infringements on freedom of religion, especially in the context of the recent arrest and detainment of over 230 human rights lawyers. Additionally, Committee members Senator Marco Rubio and Representative Christopher Smith expressed disapproval of the current administration receiving Chinese President Xi Jinping with a “red carpet treatment” during Xi’s visit this September with the White House in light of these infringements.
Witnesses included Rebiya Kadeer, the president of the World Uyghur Congress, Losang Gyatso, a prolific graphic designer and Tibetan community organizer, Bob Fu, who founded ChinaAid Association, and Anastasia Lin, the current Miss World Canada. Testimony focused in particular on the Chinese government’s use of activists’ family members as leverage to silence vocal practitioners.
