AROUND noon on Feb. 19, an 18-year-old named Nangdrol set himself on fire near the Zamthang Monastery in the northeast Tibetan town of Barma. In a note left behind, he wrote, “I am going to set myself on fire for the benefit of all Tibetans.” Referring to China’s ethnic Han majority as “devils,” he added, “It is impossible to live under their evil law, impossible to bear this torture that leaves... more

The free and open Internet is under attack.
At a global conference in Dubai this week, Russia, China, and other like-minded governments will attempt to cripple the Internet and replace innovation, openness, and connectivity -- hallmarks of the Internet you know and love -- with international controls and censorship. Average Internet users stand to lose out because, if approved, these governments... more

SAN FRANCISCO–For Gao Zhisheng’s family, visiting the imprisoned Christian at his remote exile in western China takes days.

Gao’s father-in-law and older brother made the trek in January: The pair rode a train nearly 2,000 miles from Shaanxi Province into the craggy mountains of the desert region of Xinjiang after obtaining clearance from prison officials to visit Gao. Then they took a public... more

A key method for circumventing China’s Internet filters, virtual private networks have come into the crosshairs of the government lately. During the 18th Party Congress earlier this month many faced blockages and more recently China Digital Times has reported on what appear to be written warnings to Chinese who have access to VPNs on their office networks to use the services for work purposes... more

It is a long-held belief of the Washington D.C.-based Laogai Research Foundation that Tibet had historically been an independent nation. In 1959, Chinese Communist troops invaded Tibet, which eventually led to His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government’s  flight into exile in India. These are historical facts.

Due to a variety of reasons, Tibet had for many years existed in... more

... more
