A new group of leaders recently took power in China. After becoming the General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party in November, Xi Jinping just received another official title: President of the People’s Republic of China. This new group of leaders also includes several Politburo members, each tasked with overseeing political, military, economic and cultural affairs in China. This ruling... more

Optimists herald China’s new president, Xi Jinping, as a liberal reformer open to the prospect of relaxing censorship controls. Xi reinforced these expectations when he recognized the need for rule of law reforms and the toleration of “sharp criticism” of official policies. Unfortunately, political realities and recent events indicate that the fifth generation of Chinese leadership will remain... more

The Duihua Foundation reports that 1,060 individuals were indicted for “endangering state security” in 2012. This is up 9% from the previous year. It should be noted, however, that as the Chinese government does not always report arrests and indictments, the actual number is likely higher.
The crime of “endangering state security” encompasses a number of offenses, including subversion, splittism... more

Cisco and the Machinery of Chinese Repression
Contrary to Cisco’s claim that they “strongly support free expression and open communication on the Internet,” the networking giant helped design and aggressively marketed arguably the most oppressive censorship tool in existence. More than just restricting access to information, technology Cisco created for the Chinese government has been... more

The four foreign criminals who murdered 13 Chinese sailors in 2011 on northern Thailand’s Mekong River were put to death by lethal injection on March 1.
I support the death sentence in this case and the execution of these men. The significance of this execution is three-fold. First, whoever commits a crime, whether foreign, stateless, or Chinese, which injures the Chinese state or its citizens,... more

Repeal of “Reeducation through Labor” is Merely a “Reform” Tactic of the Chinese Communist Party

Harry Wu

“Laojiao”—“reeducation through labor”—is a repressive regime of the Chinese Communist Party and an integral part of the laogai system.

In 1956, the Chinese Communist Party initiated the “Movement to Cleanse Counter-Revolutionary Elements” to further suppress counter-revolutionaries.... more
