Protest in Maoming, Guandong Turns Violent

A public demonstration protesting the construction of a PX petrochemical plant in the city of Maoming, Guangdong province turned violent Sunday afternoon after over a thousand people joined the rally. Photos of the scene show large crowds, beaten and bloody protesters, and at least one police van on fire. Although state media reported than nobody died in the incident, it is unclear how many people were seriously injured by the violence.

Man Gets 18-Month Sentence for Planning Tiananmen Square Anniversary Protest

A court in Jiangsu province sentenced Gu Yimin to 18 months in prison for "inciting subversion of the state" after he applied to hold a protest commemorating the 24th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre last June. In addition to filing a permit application with local authorities, Gu posted a picture of the Tiananmen Square Massacre online.
