Human rights activist formally arrested in China

After three months under house arrest, Chinese authorities have formally arrested Xu Zhiyong, one of the country's most prominent human rights activists. Observers speculate that Xu's recent work to expose official corruption prompted his arrest.

Widely regarded as a moderate who seeks to change the system from within, his arrest provides further evidence that the newly installed government will continue to vehemently suppress public expression of dissent. 

Pollution Leads to Drop in Life Span in Northern China, Research Finds

According to a recent study conducted by the National Academy of Sciences, a highly regarded American scientific publication, the life expectancy of people living in northern China is 5.5 years shorter than residents of southern China. Researchers partly attribute this disparity to increased pollution in the north resulting from excessive coal use.
