Report: Accused Sex Workers Detained and Beaten by Police

Human Rights Watch reports that authorities regularly conduct sweeps of karaoke bars, massage parlors, and hair salons in campaigns to detain, harass, and blackmail alleged sex workers. According to the report, police often use techniques amounting to torture under Chinese law to coerce women into confessing to prostitution. The report urges the Chinese government to enact legislation protecting sex workers.

Prominent 'Rights" Lawyers Beaten in Sichuan Black Jail

A number of prominent 'rights' lawyers, attorneys who work on civil rights issues, were detained and beaten in a Sichuan 'black jail.'  Black jails are illegal detention facilities local officials use to incarcerate petitioners and political dissidents. The use of black jails has flourished in recent years as government officials across China seek to fulfill central government directives to maintain social stability.

中國人權災難圖展在紐約州立法大樓開展

由勞改基金會策劃編印的中國人權災難圖展,於本月6日在紐約州立法大樓一樓通道兩側開展。展覽吸引了大批州議員、官員、州行政中心和立法中心的工作人員,以及其他觀眾。圖展開展的第二天,州參議院通過決議案,表彰這次圖展和勞改基金會負責人吳弘達先生為揭示中國真實的人權狀況所作出的不懈努力。

這次圖展的主題為“中國的人權災難”,用四十多塊展板簡要記述了中共建政以來給中國人民帶來的各種重大人權災難,如毛時代血腥的政治運動、勞改、計劃生育、言論審查、宗教迫害等等。圖展旨在提高美國公眾對中國人權問題的認識和關注,從而促進中國人權狀況的改善。
